10 Signs You Have a Rodent Infestation

Rodents destroy wiring, insulation and food supplies. They also spread disease. Because of this, it is important to know the early signs of a rodent infestation before the problem grows. Here are ten clear indicators that mice or rats may be inside your home or business.

1. Droppings Near Food or Storage Areas

Rodent droppings are small, dark and pointed. They often appear near pantries, cabinets, closets or behind appliances. When droppings show up in more than one area, activity is increasing.

2. Scratching or Movement in Walls

If you hear scratching, running or tapping sounds in your walls or ceiling, rodents are likely moving from one nesting area to another. These sounds are most common at night.

3. Gnaw Marks on Wood or Plastic

Mice and rats chew constantly to keep their teeth trimmed. As a result, gnaw marks appear on baseboards, cabinets, storage bins and even electrical wiring. This is a clear warning sign.

4. Shredded Paper or Insulation

Rodents build nests using shredded insulation, paper, fabric and dried plant material. If you spot small piles of these materials, rodents are likely nesting nearby.

5. Strong or Musty Odors

A strong odor is one of the easiest signs to notice. Rodent urine produces a sour, stale smell that grows stronger as the infestation grows. If the odor is noticeable in multiple rooms, the problem is active.

6. Grease Marks Along Walls

Rodents travel the same paths every night. Their bodies leave dark, greasy smudge marks on walls, corners and baseboards. These trails show you where they move and hide.

7. Damaged Food Packaging

If you find torn bags, chewed boxes or small holes in food containers, rodents are getting into your pantry. Because this can contaminate food, take it seriously and act fast.

8. Pet Behavior Changes

Dogs and cats notice rodents long before humans do. If your pet stares at walls, sniffs vents or becomes restless at night, there may be activity behind the surfaces.

9. Burrows Near the Exterior of Your Home

Rats and some mice dig burrows near foundations, AC units or trash areas. These holes appear as small openings with loose dirt around them. Burrows often lead directly into wall voids.

10. Live or Dead Rodents Indoors

Seeing a live rodent means the infestation is active. Seeing a dead one means the infestation has already progressed. In both situations, take immediate action.

What To Do if You Notice These Signs

Rodent infestations grow fast. One or two mice can turn into dozens within weeks. Because of this, early action is the best way to prevent damage and protect your home.
