Carpenter Bees in Spring: Risks to Your Home and Family

Carpenter bees become active every spring in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley. They look similar to bumblebees but behave very differently. These bees can cause structural damage and create safety concerns if they nest near your home.

How to Identify Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees have a black, shiny abdomen. Bumblebees have yellow hairs across most of their bodies. Carpenter bees also hover near wood surfaces instead of pollinating flowers. You will often see them around:

• Deck boards

• Eaves

• Fascia boards

• Fence posts

• Wooden trim

• Old stumps

This behavior makes them easy to identify.

Where Carpenter Bees Nest

Carpenter bees do not build hives. They bore holes into soft, untreated wood to create nesting tunnels. These holes protect eggs and larvae from predators. Common nesting sites include:

• Roof eaves

• Deck railings

• Barns

• Sheds

• Porch ceilings

Carpenter bees do not eat wood the way termites or carpenter ants do. Their holes can still weaken wooden structures over time. These holes also attract woodpeckers, which can create additional damage.

Do Carpenter Bees Sting?

Female carpenter bees can sting. Their sting can cause redness, swelling and discomfort. Allergic reactions require medical attention. Male carpenter bees cannot sting. They may fly aggressively near people, but this is only a defensive display.

Avoid touching or disturbing carpenter bee nests. This reduces the risk of being stung by a female bee.

How to Prevent Carpenter Bee Damage

A few simple steps help reduce activity:

• Remove untreated wood and brush near your home

• Paint or seal exposed wood to make it less attractive

• Install carpenter bee traps near active areas

• Inspect for new holes during spring and early summer

If the issue grows or structural damage increases, professional treatment is recommended.
